I know it’s been a long time, but exams period is here and things are a bit intense. Well at least Kwon has been doing a great job, keeping the blog together. I would so love to write a “Birth of a Beauty” review , but right now time is money , so hopefully I will find money in the future 😛 ( it wasn’t a typo just a lame joke ). For my good luck, studying wasn’t enough I got back problems too, so I had to stay in bed for some days. Well some good came out of it , during my break I decided to start my marathon of movies that are based on shojo manga. I’ve already seen “Paradise Kiss” , “Nodame Cantabile” , “Nana” , “Kyou Koi wo Hajimemasu” , “Kimi Ni Todoke” , “Paradise Kiss” , “Bokura ga Ita Kouhen” even “Death Note”, but I have so many more on my list that I have to keep up with the releases.
So I’ve been wanting to watch, “L-DK” since it’s trailer was released, but I had to wait for some site to get it and for the English subs , the straggle of being an international fan. Truth is I haven’t read the manga , but after watching the movie , I might will.
Another reason , I got my eye on this one was Gouriki Ayame , she really caught my eye in Taisetsu na Koto wa Subete Kimi ga Oshiete Kureta (You taught me all the great things) and since then , I’ve been following her job. I was glad she was lead too.
About the movie , a cute romantic movie that contains all the heart fluttering scenes a drama-holic person needs. But not in the right amount.
The plot , is simply , a high school boy and a high school girl live alone in Tokyo I the same building and due to some incident they become roommates. The boy has a dark past that’s why his behavior isn’t very smooth and the girl is a simply minded girl of her age.
Their story begins , when Aoi’s (Ayame Gouriki) friend Moe (Rei Okamoto) , confesses to the handsome school boy Shuusei Kugayama (Kento Yamazaki) and gets a cold reply. Aoi wants to ask the reason , he rejected her friend and while doing that, she accidentally throws him of the stairs. Then Shuusei makes Aoi carry him home and they find out , they both live in the same apartment complex. Since they both live alone , Shuusei decides to take advantage of the situation and make Aoi , pretty much his slave.
There we have our first romantic scene , I personally didn’t need more to ship them. Shuuesi shows his cold sassy side , being a guy that wants to tease pure Aoi , he goes topless and “backhugs” Aoi while she cooks for him , it was so cheesy I got goose bumps. Aoi gets a shock and burns the food, the fire alarm goes off and ruins Shuusei’s apartment and they ave to live together at her place. There our love story starts.
Little by little they get closer. That’s were the main issue of the story appears. In my opinion the meaning of L♥DK , which means “Living together” is how two people find each other by sharing their personal space. How you get used to a certain person , when they come into your life and how you don’t realize the chance until this person is gone. Like Aoi , who in the beginning , didn’t actually like Shuusei but when she had him in her life , her every day changed. Small things like , someone holding your hand , when it’s raining and you’re scared or cooking for someone with love.
But unfortunately, those romantic feelings have to come for both sides. Shuusei is a more complicated person than Aoi. He enjoys his time with her , but he can’t feel it completely , since he has his own issues. The past gets back to him when Satsuki (Anna Ishibashi) , his somewhat ex-girlfriend appears. We get to know his story , how she was very vulnerable and wouldn’t let Shuusei go. Then an incident , when she was waiting for him in the cold and almost died , scared Shuusei , who since then felt he owed to stay by her side no matter what.
Aoi seems understanding about it and that’s what kills him the most. In the scene , were she waits for him on his birthday and he is with Satsuki , we witness his complicated side. He gets home late and finds out , Aoi has cooked for him even made a cake. Coming from a messed up family and an relationship full of issues , he can’t control this happiness and the love Aoi gives him. That’s why he treats her bad, it’s his way of pushing her away. They fight and he packs his bag to leave their house. Then Aoi runs on the rainy streets to reason with him and let him know , she wants to live with him no matter what. My personal favorite scene in the movie.
After that scene the movie gets rushed. Aoi gets through a small depressed period , she decides she has to let go of Shuusei , gives her friend Wataru Sanjo (Ren Kiriyama) a chance to go to the fireworks. But in the end she decides she can’t deny her love , the same happens to Shuusei , they find their way to each other on the firework day , which was their original promise and they get their happy ending.
I would prefer if the movie was a drama so the development would have been better especially for Shuusei’s character, I understand that in the manga his behavior, must have been explained in detail , but in the movie there is not enough time to see , the changes in his character. The same happens with Aoi’s and Wataru’s love line.
Also about the acting , Yamazaki Kento was good , but maybe I wanted for him to work a little more. Ayame seemed pretty natural and the chemistry between them was strong.
Loved the scenes between the main leads , cause of their chemistry I would want them to be longer. When the ending was coming , I was thinking “No I want more!!”. Especially when Shuusei leaves, I think they would point out more the time that passes, when he moves out and how that affects Aoi Nishimori. I would love to see him grow mentally and try to get her back. Cause his job in the end seemed pretty easy to me.
Once again this movie’s main fault was lack of time. They probably tried to put everything in the manga, in a two hour film but still it wasn’t enough. I would love to watch “L♥DK” as a drama.
Apart from that, I really enjoyed it and hands down I give it a 7 out of 10.
What about you ?
p.s A great piece of advice from Moe
